Current Conservation Projects

Moving forward with conservation in the high priority
High Peaks Region of western Maine

MATLT's current conservation project consists of two parcels of land in our high priority High Peaks region.

Parcel 1 is consists of 5,900 acres abutting MATLT's Saddleback parcel on the southeast slopes of Saddleback Mountain.  This parcel is traditional timberland, with recreational opportunities for motorized and non-motorized activities.  MATLT's intention is to protect the property with a conservation easement that will guarantee public access and prevent further fragmentation from development.  A key feature of this property is a native brook trout stream that is also the site of successful Atlantic Salmon resoration efforts.

Parcel 2 is 1,163 acres abutting the Appalachian Trail.  This property is at a higher elevation at will protect views from the Trail, habitat for the Bicknell's Thrush, and public access.

Our three year fundraising campaign for the protection of both parcels is $2,500,000.

MATLT is partnering with the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust (RLHT) on a proposal for federal funding through the US Forest Service Forest Legacy program  for part of our funding goal.  Our two parcels are being joined with a 6,383 lakefront easement project in the town of Rangeley into the 'Rangeley High Peaks, Phase 1' project.
