Advisory Council

 1.      Honorable Thomas H. Allen

Tom Allen was recently re-elected to a fourth term representing Maine’s First Congressional District in the 108th Congress. He is a Portland native and a graduate of Bowdoin College and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. Tom graduated from Harvard Law School in 1974 and worked in a Portland law firm for 20 years. He served on the Portland City Council and was a former Mayor of Portland.

 2.      Richard E. Barringer

Dick Barringer is currently a Research Professor of Public Policy & Management Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Policy University of Southern Maine. He served in the administrations of three Maine Governors as Director of Public Lands, Commissioner of Conservation, and Director of State Planning. Dick has served as a consultant on strategic planning and director of two non-profit research and public education organizations in Maine. He is a graduate of Harvard College (A.B.), University of Massachusetts (M.A), and M.I.T. (Ph.D). He is the author or editor of six books, numerous reports, and many landmark Maine laws in the areas of education, the environment, energy, and economic development.

3.      Dean  Bennett

Professor emeritus University of Maine at Farmington; PhD in resource planning & conservation from U. of Michigan; following long career in education, he is now writing full time, books include Maine’s Natural Heritage: Rare Species and Unique Natural Features; Allagash: Maine’s Wild & Scenic River; The Forgotten Nature of New England: A Search for The Original Wilderness; and The Wilderness from Chamberlain Farm: A Story of Hope For The American Wild.

 4.      David B. Field

Dave Field is currently Edwin L. Giddings Professor of Forest Policy, Professor of Forest Resources, and Chair, Department of Forest Management at the University of Maine Orono. He teaches courses in Forest Economics, Forest Policy, and Forest Ecosystem Management and has authored numerous papers and consulting reports on topics in forest economics, forest policy, and operations analysis. Dave received a B.S.and Master of Science in Forestry from the University of Maine and a Ph.D. in Forest Economics from Purdue University. He has a long association with the Appalachian Trail and served as Chairman of the Appalachian Trail Conference for 6 years.

5.      Leon A. Gorman

Leon Gorman was appointed President of LL Bean in 1967 and has firmly established the company as a leader in the outdoors industry during the past 30 years. He has received numerous awards from various national and state civic and philanthropic organizations. He plays a leadership role in public policy discussions about Maine’s economy and is Co-Chair of the Institute on Maine’s Economic Future. Among his board commitments, he serves as a trustee of Bowdoin College (his alma mater), Maine Audubon Society, and Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

6.      Edward R. Guyot, CPA

Partner in the accounting firm of John G. Burk & Associates since 1992, has held a variety of senior financial management positions in private industry; formerly an Incorporator, Board member and Treasurer of a local non-profit performing arts center; active hiker and member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Appalachian Trail Conference, and the Mount Washington Observatory.

7.      Sherry Huber

Sherry Huber she has been the Executive Director of the Maine TREE Foundation since 1966. She served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1976-1982 and ran twice for Governor in 1982 and 1986. She chairs the Board of Directors of the Mainewatch Institute and is a Trustee of the College of the Atlantic, the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and the Falmouth Conservation Trust, and is a Director of NatureServe. Additionally she serves with The University of Maine School of Law Board of Visitors, the Maine League of Conservation Voters Board and is a member of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies Leadership Council. She is a graduate of Smith College and received the Down East Magazine Environmental Award in 2003.

8.      Honorable Mike Michaud

After high school graduation, Mike Michaud followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, gaining employment at the Great Northern Paper Company. Mike first ran for and was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1980, where he went on to serve seven consecutive terms.  Mike was recently re-elected to a second term representing Maine’s Second Congressional District in the 109th Congress. 

9.      Ray”Bucky” Owen

“Bucky” Owen was formerly the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. He was previously a Professor of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Maine for 30 years and was Chairman of the Department of Wildlife Ecology. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College and received a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Illinois. He has served on numerous boards of organizations including the Natural Resource Council of Maine, The Nature Conservancy, Land Use Regulation Commission, and Maine Critical Areas Program.

10.      Neil Rolde

Neil Rolde is an author and former state legislator (10 years in the Maine State House of Representatives). He has served on various boards of non-profit organizations and government commissions including the Maine Health Care Reform Commission, Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation (former Chairman of the Board), and the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. He is the author of several books including, The Baxters of Maine, and The Interrupted Forest.
